Visa for language courses in the USA


Visa:

- valid for every citizen from foreign countries
- citizens from following countries who are staying for less than 90 days on pleasure or business trip to the United States are excluded:
Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland or Spain, and

Note:

- everyone must apply who:
- intends to accept paid or unpaid employment in the USA (also applies to journalists, au-pairs and interns)
- wishes to travel to the United States for more than 90 days in order to attend secondary school or university (as part of an exchange program or a self-organized stay)
- have been denied entry on a previous occasion or have been expelled from the USA during the last five years
- has a criminal record or suffer from a serious transmittable disease or mental disorder


Most commonly requested types of visa:

- Temporary visitor for business or pleasure
- Treaty trader or investor
- Student (academic or language program)
- Individuals in specialty occupations (e.g. nurses)
- Exchange visitor
- Fiancé(e) of U.S. Citizen
- Student in vocational or recognized non-academic program
- Individuals with extraordinary ability in sciences, arts, education, business, athletics
- Participant in an international cultural exchange program

Disclosure by passport does apply:

- to any citizen

Attention: passport has to be valid at least 3 - 6 months at the day of entry

Application documents for a visa:

- an application form DS-156 for each applicant, regardless of age, completed and signed. The application form can be completed online (English | German) or may be obtained via the embassys fax-on-demand service
- male applicants between the ages of 16-45 must fully complete supplemental form DS-157
- a passport or child identification card (for German and most European citizens valid for at least the duration of your intended stay in the United States). If more than one person is shown on the passport, a separate visa application is needed for each person who is traveling to the United States;
- a recent passport photograph for each applicant, also for children
- visa payment confirmation: evidence of having paid the non-refundable visa processing fee for each application.
- a stamped, self-addressed envelope large enough for the return of your passport and documents. Please do not use registered mail
- proof of your ties to the country you reside and of your intention to leave the U.S. after your temporary stay
- certain visas require extra documentation: i.e. form DS-2019, I-20 or I-797. These documents are not available from the consular offices, only from the exchange organization, school or employer


Exchange Visitors (J-Visa)

The "J" exchange visitor program is designed to promote the interchange of persons, knowledge, and skills in the fields of education, arts, and sciences. Participants include students at all academic levels; trainees obtaining on-the-job training with firms, institutions, and agencies; teachers of primary, secondary, and specialized schools; professors coming to teach or do research at institutions of higher learning; research scholars; professional trainees in the medical and allied fields; and international visitors coming for the purpose of travel, observation, consultation, research, training, sharing, or demonstrating specialized knowledge or skills, or participating in organized people-to-people programs.

Required Documentation

- An application Form DS-156, together with a Form DS-158. Both forms must be completed and signed. Some applicants will also be required to complete and sign Form DS-157. Both forms DS-157 and DS-158 can be downloaded.
- A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States. If more than one person is included in the passport, each person desiring a visa must make an application
- One (1) 2x2 photograph. See the required photo format explained in nonimmigrant photograph requirements.
- For the "J" applicant, a completed Form DS-2019. For the "Q" applicant, a notice of approval, Form I-797.

Students (F/M-Visa)

The Immigrant and Nationality Act provides two nonimmigrant visa categories for persons wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is for academic studies, and the "M" visa is for nonacademic or vocational studies.


Required Documentation

- an application form DS-156 for each applicant, regardless of age, completed and signed
- male applicants between the ages of 16-45 must fully complete supplemental form DS-157
- all applicants seeking F, J and M visas must complete and submit a form DS-158 (Contact Information And Work History for Nonimmigrant Visa Applicant), in addition to form DS-156 and, if necessary, form DS-157 (Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application)
- a passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least for the duration of the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States for German citizens or six months beyond for some other nationalities. If more than one person is included in the passport, each person desiring a visa must make an application.
- one recent photograph for each applicant, including children.
- for the "F" applicant, a Form I-20A-B. For the "M" applicant, a Form I-20M-N
- visa payment confirmation: evidence of having paid the non-refundable visa processing fee for each application.
- evidence of your intention to leave the USA after a temporary stay

Fee

The fee amount is $100 for full time programs and $35 for the following short-term exchange programs: au pairs, summer work/travel and camp counselors.All principal applicants for F, J and M visas must pay the new SEVIS I-901 fee. An exemption is granted for those participants of U.S. Government sponsored programs. These are identified by a program number prefix beginning with "G-1," "G-2" or "G-3".
