We offer BEC Business English courses as well as Cambridge, and TOEIC Exam Preparation classes. In addition we run an under 16 programme with partner Government schools as well as tour group programmes for students under 16 years old. All class materials are provided free to the student. We don't use one textbook because for each level we have developed a special curriculum using a range of internationally approved textbooks as well as videos, magazines, listening tapes, computer programmes, newspapers and other resources developed by the school. General English classes in the afternoon concentrate even more on the fluency skills introduced in the morning classes. There is a lot of pair and group work discussions on many varied and interesting topics and exercises to improve listening skills used in everyday English. Every Friday afternoon students can choose; a free movie in our movie theatre, conversation class options, or a cheap activity. We believe in international English and our teachers are from many different English speaking countries. They are from New Zealand, USA, UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa. At Worldwide School you can speak with and learn English with students from almost 30 different countries. This is a wonderful chance to REALLY learn and experience international English. Speaking with Czechs, Vietnamese, Brazilians, Chinese, Germans, Japanese, Colombians and others helps your English to get even better. We have English PLUS programmes: Farm Experience, Internship, Au Pair, Summer Sport (Scuba Dive, Sail and Surf), Environment Volunteer, Travel & Tourism and International Flight Attendant. We also offer a "COMBO Course" combining study with travel at our partner schools in Napier, Christchurch and Queenstown. Worldwide School of English offers many different English programmes to satisfy many different students' requirements. Our teaching is based on the most up-to-date communicative method of teaching English and is designed to involve students as much as possible in their learning. We create an enjoyable and warm learning environment in our classrooms. Our students are actively involved in communicating with the teacher and with each other. Students are expected to talk, give opinions and be involved in their learning as well as STUDY HARD. English is an international language spoken all over the world by many different nationalities with many different accents. Even native speakers have many, many different accents. In your life, you are likely to speak more English with non native speakers than with native speakers. At Worldwide School we believe that to speak with and learn English from our teachers, who are from many English speaking countries and our students, from more than 30 different countries is a wonderful chance to REALLY learn and experience international English. Speaking with New Caledonians, Indonesians, Brazilians, Saudi Arabians, Germans, Japanese etc helps your English to get even better. At Worldwide School our students do not use only one textbook in class. We don't believe that the perfect textbook has ever been written and we like to choose the best possible lesson for every subject and to suit each different class. One textbook alone cannot provide this, so each teacher has five, six or more textbooks that he or she can choose from to plan the perfect lesson for the student's needs. Teachers can also write their own lessons or make lessons using articles, a TV or radio show or a song, for example. Each student receives their own folder to keep their lessons in and they must bring it to school everyday. The folder will provide a record of all that they have learnt during their time at Worldwide School. All study materials are provided free. We believe in international (WORLDWIDE) English. We use material from USA, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Our teachers are all qualified (with TEFL qualifications and university degrees) and experienced native-speaker teachers from many different countries. We have teachers from New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland and South Africa. Our teachers are one of our biggest strengths and we are very proud of them. At Worldwide School we believe it is important for our students to experience the diversity and skills of our teachers. Long term students will benefit by learning from a number of our teachers not just one. - General English morning classes From 9am to 12.15pm Monday to Friday We offer 7 levels: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced and Proficiency. Students are tested and placed carefully into their correct level on their first day at school. Students move up when they have passed the required skills tests. These tests are given on the first and third Wednesday of each month in two of the four skills: reading/speaking and writing/listening. In addition, teachers give regular grammar and vocabulary assessments. At each level we teach essential grammar and necessary skills and functions. We improve students' writing and reading skills. Students also have a lot of listening and speaking practice. Teachers want students to practise their speaking, give opinions and ask questions. - General English afternoon classes From 1.30 to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday with Friday options. General English afternoon classes have even more speaking and listening. There is a lot of pair and group work, discussions on varied and interesting topics, games, songs, videos, vocabulary and exercises to improve speaking and listening skills used in everyday English. - Afternoon Special class options From 1.30 to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday with Friday options. As well as General English afternoon classes we offer other special afternoon classes for our full-time General English students. Some of our options include pronunciation, reading and movie watching, New Zealand studies, English through song and English on the Internet. There are always at least two afternoon options offered at any one time. New options will be announced in classes the week before a new class begins. The schedule for options is always changing and new options are added regularly, therefore students cannot enrol for these options from overseas. - Self Access Self Access is an afternoon option designed to improve students' English skills in a fully individualised program using a wide variety of self-study resources. The student, with the help of the teacher, decides what area of English he or she needs to improve and the teacher designs a programme that caters for each individual student's level of English, interests and problem areas. Students use the school library and computers. There are books, videos, tapes, magazines, grammar worksheets, computer programmes, websites and much more to work from. Students will have an interview with the teacher and complete a Task Card. Every day students will complete a Daily Planner and keep a record of their progress in their Personal Library File. - Friday afternoon options Every Friday afternoon, full-time General English students can choose from Conversation Classes, a movie, an IELTS practice test or an activity. All options except the movie are only available for full-time students and they need to sign up to join them by Thursday 4pm. The movie is played in our school movie theatre. The activity options are an extra cost. We try to select low cost activities, usually from NZ$10 but sometimes we offer more expensive activities for around NZ$50. The school library is also open for students wishing to self-study after class hours. - EAP (English for Academic Purposes)/IELTS EAP classes are from 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Minimum 8 weeks full-time. This programme is for students planning further studies or requiring a more academic English course. The EAP course is offered only for students at Upper Intermediate, Advanced and Proficiency levels. The morning programme consists of a general English course incorporating the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In addition there is an hour of IELTS focus each morning. The afternoon course focuses on topics and skills needed for the IELTS exam and for success at university. Modules include business, pronunciation, NZ history, crime and the legal system, education, the environment, current events, science and technology, computers and IT and others. The EAP course also includes an integrated programme of cultural and community activities such as guest speakers, museum trips and tours to places of interest. These activities are generally free for the students. All EAP students often work on a project each month. Projects include research papers, oral presentations, group work and interviews. There is both self-study and library skills work built into the syllabus and students will need to get a library card. EAP courses are the same price as general English courses. Every Friday afternoon EAP students can take an IELTS practice exam. Students wishing to study for the IELTS exam will need to join the EAP class. As a general guideline, a student at EAP can expect to improve by a band score between 0.5 to 1.0 in IELTS for every 12 weeks of study. - TOEFL/TOEIC Worldwide School offers TOEIC preparation classes as part of its afternoon options. At Worldwide School we are a TOEIC testing centre and so students can take the TOEIC test at Worldwide. Students need to pay for the TOEIC text book and test. For more information on TOEFL dates please contact Maureen on Maureen@worldwideschoolofenglish.com or check the TOEFL website about test dates in New Zealand www.ets.org/toefl Students are also welcome at anytime to join a General English class or our EAP classes for language preparation. Minimum age is 18 years old. Each apartment is fully furnished and self-contained with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. We have 2 types of apartments: single/couple and share apartments. The costs are: NZ$120 placement fee (not charged if the student is transferring from a Worldwide School homestay). Share apartments cost NZ$130 per week per student. Single apartments are NZ$230 per week (plus we do have some share facility single bedroom apartments at NZ$200 per week). The share room daily rate is NZ$20 and the daily rate for a single room is NZ$35. Note: We offer a 10% discount on Worldwide House accommodation fees. Discount is paid (or deducted from future bookings) when the student finally moves out of the apartments (as they may leave earlier or extend) and NOT from an invoice. The amount includes electricity and water costs as well as towels, a bed, sheets, TV, toaster, kettle etc...It does NOT include food and other consumables. The student will also need to pay a bond of NZ$250. This bond is included in the invoice and must be paid along with all other payments. For a couple booking an apartment, only one bond payment of NZ$250 will be charged. After an inspection the bond money is returned in full, if the student leaves the apartment in good condition with nothing broken or missing. 4 weeks is the minimum time you can stay at Worldwide House. The Worldwide House student book explains in more detail the bond refund process and the deductions that can be made. A Worldwide House 4-week booking includes 1 extra free day. Any extra days after that are charged at NZ$20 per day for share and NZ$35 for single. Worldwide House has a student room with satellite TV, video, telephones, laptop connections for free and internet access at a small cost. There are also several outdoor areas including a BBQ space with a game area, vending machines with drinks and a laundry area where washing machines and dryers are available at a small cost. No apartment has all students of the same nationality. We put our students together with a student from at least one other country. Also, the apartments have students of the same sex only. Worldwide House is located near Newmarket, Auckland's famous shopping area and is only 15 minutes by bus to the city. After a student graduates from Worldwide School it is possible to extend their stay at Worldwide House as long as an apartment is not needed by another Worldwide School student. 2-weeks notice will be given by the school for ex-students who will need to leave Worldwide House. If a student wishes to leave or extend at Worldwide House, then they must give notice at least 2 weeks before. This is the same rule for homestays. If a student goes away on holiday for a week or more, but wishes to remain at Worldwide House, they need to continue paying the full weekly amount. The first 4 weeks of accommodation cannot be refunded. If a student wants to leave, 2-weeks notice must be given to the apartment co-ordinator at school. - Homestays At Worldwide School we provide students with a New Zealand family to live with while studying at Worldwide School. The homestay family or our airport pick up service will meet the student at the airport, bring them to school on their first day and help them discover Auckland and learn about "Kiwi Culture". All our homestays are inspected by our Homestay Co-ordinators as well as Police checked. Our Homestay Co-ordinators also interview each family. As soon as our Homestay Co-ordinators receive information about a new student they match each student to the best possible family. All of our families live close to a bus stop and other conveniences. No student is ever placed in a homestay where another person speaks his or her native language. Homestay details are usually sent to the student 2 weeks before the student is due to arrive. Students are welcome to start communicating with their family before they arrive. Homestay families like to get to know students and learn about their country, so students should be encouraged to talk as much as possible with their family. New Zealand family culture is usually relaxed and informal, but politeness is greatly appreciated. All meals on weekends and holidays are included and breakfast and dinner on school days. Students are expected to help with housework and obey family rules. They should try to keep shower length to a minimum as most New Zealand families have a limited supply of hot water. Some host families will do laundry for their students and some will not. It is a good idea for the student to ask the host family how to use the washing machine. Then the family will either explain how, or tell the student that they will do the washing for the student. If the family invites the student to go on a trip or excursion with them, the student needs to check what they need to pay for. If the student wishes to take a holiday for a week or longer but keep their room at the homestay, then they will be charged at 1/2 of weekly rate. The cost for a couple in a homestay is NZ$390 per week. Double rooms in homestays are more difficult to find and arrange so therefore we still charge the placement fee of NZ$120 to each student. For adult students wishing to stay an extra day or more at their homestay the daily rate is NZ$30 per day. Students can start and leave any day at their accommodation. Extra days can be invoiced either before the student arrives or after they have arrived in New Zealand. The first 4 weeks of Homestay cannot be refunded. If a student wants to leave, 2-weeks notice must be given to both the family and the Homestay Co-ordinator. We also offer special rates for family groups or parent with child(ren) studying on the Junior Programme who wish to stay with a NZ homestay family. Rates are (if parent doesn't study): NZ$420 per week for 1 parent and 1 child shared room NZ$630 per week for 1 parent and 2 children shared room NZ$840 per week for 2 parents and 2 children (1 or 2 rooms) NZ$840 per week for 1 parent and 3 children (1 or 2 rooms) (Note that the weekly amount is NZ$10 per week less per parent if they also study at Worldwide School. Also, we charge a maximum of NZ$240 accommodation placement fee for families of 2 or more.)
