How to Get to and from Nanaimo
By Air
If students are flying to Nanaimo it is a 20 minute connecting flight from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Nanaimo-Collishaw Airport (YCD). This is the recommended route for students who are travelling by air to Malaspina.
By Land
If students are driving or taking the bus, the best route is by BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay (TransCanada Highway #1) West Vancouver to Departure Bay, Nanaimo. The ferry trip is very beautiful and takes about 1.5 hours.
Another BC Ferries route is from Southern Vancouver, from Tsawassen to Duke Point in Nanaimo. This is also a very beautiful trip and takes about 2 hours.
Vancouver tourist highlights of Gastown, Robson Street, Stanley Park, GM place, etc. are all easily reached from the ferry by public transit.

The student residences have 189 single rooms furnished with a bed, desk and chair, as well as a small refrigerator. Outlets are available for private telephone and cable TV. Bathrooms containing a sink, toilet and shower are shared between each two rooms, with dual-lock doors providing security and privacy. The residence includes 8 specially-designed suites for students with disabilities; bathrooms contain a toilet, sink and bath.
Each floor is equipped with vending machines, coin-operated laundry, pay phones, lounges and kitchens. Lounges contain an eating area, a large TV with converter and comfortable chairs to relax and socialize. Kitchens have a stove top, microwave ovens, kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board. Dishes and pots and pans are supplied by the student. Parking is available for residents, and a bus stop is a few steps away.
The residence is located between the academic and applied programs areas of the University-College, near the cafeteria, library, bookstore, student activity building, and gymnasium.
Two hundred new residences are available from spring 2005 with a mixture of dorm style and apartment style residences.
Homestay
Homestay is an opportunity to live with a Canadian family; the host family will provide you with three meals a day and offer a supportive environment to learn and practice your English language skills. You gain an invaluable experience of learning about Canadian customs and culture, and making life-long friends.
The deadline for Homestay applications is a minimum of six weeks before the start of school. For example, for the September semester, your Homestay application must be submitted before July 15; for the May semester it is due on March 15; and for the January semester it is due on November 15.
Please note: if you arrive more than 2 weeks early, you may not be able to move in with your family right away. Contact the Homestay Office when you arrive (250) 740-6159.
Cost: $600.00 CDN per month or $20.00 per night. Please do not select Homestay unless you are serious about wanting the experience of living with a Canadian family.
B. Peerstay
Peerstay is suited for independent students who are interested in living with a Canadian family but who wish to cook their own meals, buy their own groceries and do their own dishes. The family will provide you with opportunities to practice your English language skills, and you will learn about Canadian cultures and customs.
Cost: $425.00 CDN per month or $14.25 per night.

Activities
| Regular activities: |
Students will be able to participate in social activities such as seasonal parties, special events, and weekly activities are arranged year round to encourage students to become involved and socialize with other International and Canadian students. These include weekly movie nights, coffee houses, etc.
There are also several opportunities throughout each semester to go on daytrips to Victoria and Vancouver for sightseeing and shopping and Mt. Washington for ski trips.
Volunteer opportunities are also available to current Malaspina students to assist new International student's in becoming familiar with Malaspina campus, to assist preparation for special and weekly events, or to become involved in the community. There are also three activity assistant student positions every semester to assist the International Student Activity Planner.
There are a range of campus-wide activities and intra-mural sports programs which are open to all Canadian and international students. These activities are a great way to get involved with campus life and meet new friends. |

Mixed Bag Activity Nights
Come join us on Tuesday nights from 8:30-10:30 for a new activity every week. Come try out some new games or twists to some old favorites. Pickleball, badminton, blind volleyball and others. It's all about fun and physical activity. Lots of prizes given away throughout the semester. Register to ensure a good time all season, drop-in when you can.
