The Canadian College of English Language has been in operations since 1991 and known as the top 5 best private language schools in Canada. Jim Clark, president and owner, was the sole founder of the first official ESL association in Vancouver called PELSA (private ESL Association) and has been in the Industry for 25 years. CCEL is known as one of the few language schools that has the best nationality mix of students coming from 25 different countries consistently throughout the year. Our teachers are highly qualified and motivated to deliver the best teaching methods to the students.
CCEL boasts a large number of classrooms, enabling us to properrly coordinate all students in accordance to their individual English levels. During the popular summer time, our capacity intake reaches 500 students daily, whereas in the winter, around 300.
CCEL has been known as the best school for Exam Preparation Programs for Cambridge and TOEFL for many years and as of January 2006, we have been appointed as the new official testing center for the TOEFL exam, positioning our school as the highest and most reliable source of education available in private institutions in Vancouver.
The Location
Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with the largest city park in North America, Stanley Park, the many sandy beaches which are minutes from downtown, and the backdrop of the spectacular North Shore Mountains covered in lush forests and snowy peaks - a city of unparalleled photo opportunities.
The North Shore Mountains offer excellent skiing in the winter at the 3 ski resorts 20 minutes from Downtown and breathtaking hiking and sightseeing opportunities year round. The city boasts numerous golf courses, tennis courts, indoor ice rinks, and sport centers for those interested in recreation, and world class theaters and centers for the performing arts for the more artistic visitors. Vancouver is also a destination for many international entertainers and shows and the home of teams in the NHL and the CFL.
A 2 hour scenic drive will take you to either Whistler Ski Resort, rated number one in North America and if you carry a US visitor's visa, Seattle is 3 hours away, in the Washington State, which is known as the Emerald City.
The Course Offerings
In the morning students study general English. There are six levels, from Elementary to Upper Advanced. The New Headway textbook (Oxford University Press) is used for Elementary to Upper Intermediate classes and the Cambridge Masterclass textbook is used for the Advanced and Upper Advanced classes (FCE, CAE, CPE). Students study reading, writing, communication, and structure as a part of this integrated course.
Elective Course Content:
Students registered in the Intensive Program (24 hours per week) choose one elective in the afternoon while those students registered in the Super Intensive Program (30 hours per week) choose two electives in the afternoon. Electives are specialized classes which allow students to focus on specific skills or needs. Elective classes include: Communication, Current Events and Media, Business English, Grammar, Pronunciation, Vocabulary Building, Writing, TOEFL, and TOEIC.
Accommodation
Enjoy the Canadian lifestyle living with a Canadian homestay family in Vancouver. Homestay accommodation is fun, safe, and a affordable way to stay in Vancouver Canada. The Canadian College Homestay Coordinator will place you with a host family which meets your requests. Students can either stay in a single room with 3 meals per day, and a shared bath, or a double shared room, 2 meals per day, 3 on weekends, and a shared bath, or a single room and 3 meals per day, and a private bath. If there is another student in the same Homestay they will speak a different language. All families are screened and monitored.
Kathy Landa our homestay coordinator will match you with a homestay that suits your personal needs. Some students have special requests concerning religion, diet, allergies, etc. can be accommodated. Most of the homestays we arrange are for CCEL students, but we would be happy to arrange homestay accommodation for anyone visiting Vancouver. Living with a homestay family is a great way to practice your english and be immersed in Canadian culture.
Homestay Location
Homestays are usually located in West Vancouver and North Vancouver. You will enjoy a homestay in a quiet, safe area, close to transit and all amenities. Transit in and around Vancouver is very good. You will find it easy to travel from your homestay to the Canadian College.
Activities
CCEL is very known for its variety of afternoon/evening/weekend activities where students can enjoy the fun Vancouver has to offer and at the same time utilize their English with other international students and our Canadian school staff. CCEL's monthly activities run from Tuesday through Friday and most Saturdays; changing its contents monthly. Most of our activities are either free or at lowest cost, with the exception of ticket admissions for major sport events or shows.
